Chronological history of our activities
1993
Dorothy Tarrant comes to Romania and establishes the Romanian Studies Program.
1995
The Romanian Studies program moved to Sighisoara. Students work with abandoned children at the municipal hospital together with Romanian translators. They reach out to poor street children and isolated elderly people.
1997
Purchase of the first Family Center building to house programs for disadvantaged children and their families. The first Club for the Elderly started as a project at the Church of the Nazarene in Sighisoara.
1998
Purchase of the House on the Rock building to serve as a center for education. Community development and intercultural exchange. Creation of the American Board of Directors.
1999
Establishment of the program for providing social services to adults with special needs.
2000
The first group of high school students trained to lead tourists on the historical tour of the fortress. The Veritas-Sighisoara Foundation is legally registered as an NGO. The Romanian Administrative Council was created.
2001
Funding from USAID (United States Agency for International Development) for Educational Development Services at Casa de pe Stâncă. Inauguration of the House on the Rock. A series of events to celebrate the start of the Advent season. The March of Lights and the Ecumenical Concert of Carols which have since become traditions.
2002
International Café opened at House on the Rock. The first annual edition of the Craftsmen's Fair.
2003
The USAID (United States Agency for International Development) Funded Domestic Violence Program was established. An awareness campaign was carried out in the community, a reference network of professionals trained to respond to families in crisis situations was formed.
2006
The first accreditation of Social Services in Mureș County.
2009
Renewal of national accreditation for social services.
2010
Petronia Popa becomes the first Executive Director of the Veritas Foundation of Romanian nationality. Dorothy Tarrant named an honorary citizen of Sighisoara.
2011
The acquisition of buildings and land for the new Family Center – until then the foundation's programs took place in a much too small building.
2012
The move to the new building of the Family Center and the period of renovations. Renewal of county accreditation for Programs for children with their families, the elderly, persons with special needs and victims of domestic violence.
2016
First funding secured for children's programs. National licensing for social services has been achieved.
2017
The daycare center has been licensed for a period of 5 years, covering all programs working with children and youth programs (standards to receive the license include buildings, staff, working with local government, and intervention plans).
2017-2020
Veritas collaborated with Sighișoara City Hall, Miron Neagu Primary School, and the Center for Community Resources for Roma (Resource Center for Roma Communities) received a grant from European funds to meet the needs of medical and social services, professional training, housing, anti-discrimination education and training. The grant activity started in October 2017, and continued until July 2020.
2019
The preschool program was closed. The number of students was not consistent enough to run this program, and we did not have a qualified teacher. The remaining children were helped to orient themselves towards an alternative kindergarten program in Sighisoara.
2020
On March 12, the Veritas and International Cafe programs closed due to the global pandemic and remained closed until September.
2021
The work on the top floor of the Veritas Family Center building was completed and the English camp was held in the new space in late June and early July. The Kids Club, Seniors Club and canteen have been re-licensed.
